How stem cell therapy may help with hip osteoarthritis
The hip is a ball-and-socket joint that carries your weight through every step. As its cartilage thins, inflammation settles into the joint capsule and stays. Medication, cortisone and physical therapy can quiet the symptoms. They do not change the joint environment.
- Mesenchymal stem cells are studied for their ability to reduce inflammation inside the hip capsule.
- Research examines how cell signalling may affect inflammation and the tissue environment. Evidence and clinical outcomes vary by application.
- Treatment is delivered into the hip joint under imaging guidance.
- Cells are prepared in our own laboratory and used fresh, never frozen.
- The protocol is written for your hip, your imaging and your goals.
Concerns to discuss with your care team
Deep groin or buttock pain
The ache that arrives with walking, standing or long sitting, and is hard to point to.
Morning stiffness
A hip that will not swing freely until you have been moving for a while.
Catching, clicking or grinding
The sensation of the joint no longer gliding as it should.
A changed walk
Shorter strides, a limp you did not choose, and the effort of socks and shoes.
Who may be a candidate
Adults with hip osteoarthritis confirmed by imaging, who have not found lasting relief from physical therapy, medication or injections, may be evaluated. This includes patients for whom replacement has been suggested but who would prefer to delay or avoid it. Candidacy is decided by our physicians after a medical review of your history and imaging, never by a form.
Treatment is not offered where there is active infection, certain cancers, or other conditions identified in review.
